VTG Aztec Copper Relief Wall Plaque Tezcatlipoca Caliban Chile Chasqui Art

This is a vintage copper relief (repujado) wall plaque depicting the central Aztec deity Tezcatlipoca (The Smoking Mirror). While the bottom text features the word Chasqui (the Inca message runners of Peru) and Chile inscribed by a modern workshop or artist, the design itself directly replicates pre-Columbian iconography from Mesoamerica. Specifically, it portrays Tezcatlipoca as depicted in historical Aztec screenfold manuscripts like the Codex Borgia. Iconography and Symbols The Smoking Mirror: Tezcatlipoca is traditionally shown with his signature circular mirror casting smoke, visible near his headdress and loincloth area. Warrior Regalia: He wears a large, elaborate feathered headdress, holds a back shield, and points forward with an adorned hand representing power, night, and fate. Missing Foot: According to Aztec mythology, Tezcatlipoca sacrificed his foot to the earth monster Cipactli. In codices, his foot is replaced by a smoking obsidian mirror or a bone. This detail is replicated in the distinct stylized design of his lower legs and feet.
