Mexican Aztec Rain God Brooch
N/A
A circular metal brooch featuring a central etched figure of Tlaloc holding a lightning bolt against a black enamel background, surrounded by a geometric border. Time period 1940-1960. During the mid 20th century Mexican silver boom, silversmiths in Taxco and other regions created a vast array of tourist jewelry celebrating ancient Aztec and Mayan iconography. These pieces often combined alpaca metal or sterling silver with black enamel to mimic traditional obsidian and precious metals. Today, these vibrant vintage brooches are prized by collectors of mid-century Latin American modernist and tourist jewelry.
