Oats are used as green manure, forage, and pet grass due to their vigorous initial growth.
I grow them from autumn for wind protection and as mulch for summer vegetables. Since I have many cats, it's useful for growing cat grass year-round. My friend's rabbits also enjoy it, so this year I'll try sowing in spring as well.

[Oats suitable for cat grass and rabbit food]
[Characteristics] Fast initial growth - Strong regrowth after being eaten by pets - Leaves grow upright and spiky
Optimal germination temperature: 15°C - 25°C. Germinates year-round under favorable temperature conditions.
How to use: Can be given to pets when they grow to about 10cm.
*Do not feed the seeds.* No pesticides used after harvest.

[For use as green manure]
While not highly effective as fertilizer, its deep root system is expected to improve soil physical properties such as water permeability.
[Incorporation timing] For expected fertilizer effect from oats, incorporation before heading is suitable due to its relatively low C/N ratio. If incorporation is delayed, it may form seeds and become a weed.
[Incorporation method] Can be chopped with a flail mower or hammer knife mower and then tilled. Re-tilling about 2 weeks after incorporation promotes decomposition.
