Japanese Kutani Porcelain Lidded Bottle Vase with Cup Meiji Era Gilt Signed
N/A
A finely executed antique Japanese Kutani porcelain lidded bottle vase with integrated cup, dating to the Meiji period (1868–1912). This elegant and unusual form combines a rounded vessel with domed lid and a fitted over-cup, traditionally associated with sake or ceremonial pouring vessels. The piece is crafted in porcelain with a milky white ground and richly decorated in the classic Kutani palette of iron red, black, and abundant gilt. The surface is adorned with alternating cartouches featuring stylized florals, geometric diaper patterns, and landscape-inspired motifs. Gilt highlights are extensively applied, including delicate foliate sprays and textured gold fields, demonstrating the refined overglaze enamel techniques characteristic of Kutani ware during the late 19th century. Height: approximately 6 inches Diameter of bowl: approximately 5 inches Condition: Good antique condition with age-appropriate wear. There is visible rubbing to the gilt, particularly along the rim bands and high points, and minor surface wear consistent with handling. No major cracks or restorations observed. Light kiln or firing imperfections may be present, typical of the period. Marks: Both the base of the bowl and the cup bear red hand-painted Kutani-style marks. The marks appear to be traditional script characters rather than factory stamps, consistent with Meiji-era production. While not definitively attributable to a specific kiln, the style aligns with export-era Kutani wares.
