Taurine for Your Dog — The Background

Taurine is one of the most common amino acids present in the bodies of our dogs, from the heart to nerve and spinal cord to their eyes.

Because taurine levels tend to decline as we age or on certain diets, the potential benefits of taurine supplementation has received a great deal of attention by longevity geeks like me.

Here’s what a recent study had to say about Taurine supplementation:

  • TAURINE SLOWED KEY AGING MARKERS:
    • Telomere shortening
    • Cellular senescence
  • TAURINE INCREASED EXERCISE ABILITY
  • TAURINE IMPROVED CARDIAC FUNCTION
  • TAURINE INCREASED LIFESPAN IN MICE BY UP TO 12%

Taurine for Your Dog’s Heart.

Taurine plays a critical role in heart health for both dogs and cats.

Cats on Taurine deficient diets were shown way back in 1992 to be at high risk for developing cardiomyopathy, which in many cases could be reversed with taurine supplementation.  Cats are naturally at high risk for taurine deficiency because they can’t make it from their diet nearly as well as other species.

More recently, it was proven that dogs on grain free diets — which have very low levels of Taurine — were also very prone to developing Dilated Cardiomyopathy… which again could be reversed in many patients with simple Taurine supplementation.

This is pretty elegant proof of Taurine’s importance.  Low Taurine = Cardiac disease;  Supplement Taurine = Cardiac disease disappears.  Enough said.

The MORAL to the story?  If you’re feeding a grain free or veggie diet, you’d better also be supplementing them with Taurine.

  • IMPROVES INSULIN SENSITIVITY and glucose tolerance, which are important factors in metabolic health.
  • REDUCES INFLAMMATION:   Taurine has anti-inflammatory properties that may help reduce inflammation, and thus aging, in both pets and humans.
